Two Moments in the Philosophical Life of Kurt Gödel Juliette

چکیده
We examine two sets of Gödel’s writings, from the very beginning of his philosophical life, and from the end of it, to wit: some remarks from the introduction to his 1929 thesis, written when Gödel was 22 years of age; we will also take up some remarks Gödel made about the Euthyphro, one of the so-called “Socratic” dialogues of Plato, in the course of a discussion with the proof theorist Sue Toledo in 1975, who took notes of that conversation. The intention in choosing these particular moments from Gödel’s philosophical life is to construct something of a philosophical portrait of Gödel, rather than draw any particular connections between them – though the connections are undoubtedly there, and are undoubtedly strong ones. The author thanks the NWO foundation for their support during the writing of this paper; Steve Awodey, Paolo Mancosu, Dana Scott and Wilfried Sieg for helpful comments and correspondence about the material in Gödel’s thesis, and Rose Cherubin and Palle Yourgrau for helpful discussions and advice concerning the Euthyphro. The author is especially grateful to Jouko Väänänen, for extensive discussions about first and higher order logic.

Gödel and analytic philosophy : how did we get here ?
It is often said about Kurt Gödel that he was the greatest logician of the twentieth century. His work in mathematical logic, when it does not constitute the very ground out of which its various subfields grew and developed, made the continuation of the subject possible at a time when fundamental concepts had not even been identified, and proofs of key theorems – in those cases when they had be...
متن کاملTruth Values and Connectives in Some Non-Classical Logics
The question as to whether the propositional logic of Heyting, which was a formalization of Brouwer's intuitionistic logic, is finitely many valued or not, was open for a while (the question was asked by Hahn). Kurt Gödel (1932) introduced an infinite decreasing chain of intermediate logics, which are known nowadays as Gödel logics, for showing that the intuitionistic logic is not finitely (man...

1. Gödel, Bernays, and Hilbert. The correspondence between Paul Bernays and Kurt Gödel is one of the most extensive in the two volumes of Gödel’s collected works devoted to his letters of (primarily) scientific, philosophical and historical interest. It ranges from 1930 to 1975 and deals with a rich body of logical and philosophical issues, including the incompleteness theorems, finitism, const...
متن کاملGödel’s Completeness and Incompleteness Theorems
This paper will discuss the completeness and incompleteness theorems of Kurt Gödel. These theorems have a profound impact on the philosophical perception of mathematics and call into question the readily apparent strength of the system itself. This paper will discuss the theorems themselves, their philosophical impact on the study of mathematics and some of the logical background necessary to u...
